Lasik Eye Correction Contraindications
Before you even consider undergoing Lasik eye correction, you should make sure that you do not have any of the Lasik contraindications. So read the following carefully.
There are two types of contraindications - absolute and relative. Absolute contraindications are for the patients who suffer from a chronic disease or a health hazard that prevents them from undergoing Lasik. Relative contraindications apply to patients with a health condition or possibility for developing a complication. In this case, the surgeon must take special precautions in their surgery and treatment plan.
An example of an absolute contraindication is a pathological condition of the cornea called keratoconus. In keratoconus there is a progressive thinning of the cornea. It happens over time and as a person gets old. Keratoconus can results in vision problems after surgery as the cornea continues to get thinner.
An example of a relative contraindication is a thin cornea. Lasik surgery requires sufficient thickness of the cornea. So if your corneal measurement is too thin (as measured by an instrument called pachymeter), then you are not a candidate for Lasik. Sometimes the surgeon can create a thinner flap of the cornea to overcome this problem. However, an alternative treatment such as as PRK or Epi Lasik is sometimes best. In these procedures, no flap is required to be created
A number of general health conditions are important factors too. People suffering from systemic diseases like lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, or fibromylagia have compromised immune systems. This can result in inadequate healing which makes it is a relative or absolute contraindication to any surgery. The same applies to diabetes. Diabetes is a relative or absolute contraindication to Lasik surgery, because it requires a stable blood sugar level over a prolonged time. In addition, uncontrolled diabetes may cause complications to the eyes.
Pregnant or nursing females are subjects of relative contraindication to any refractive laser eye surgery. This is because of the hormonal changes in the body of the female which can interfere with surgery.
Cataract patients are not candidates for Lasik as it is a progressive condition. For this reason, having cataracts is an absolute contraindication. However, such patients may undergo Crystalens or Restor & Crystalens lens replacement surgery. Glaucoma, a history of serious eye infections such as ocular Herpes, and having had retinal detachment surgery are relative contraindications. In this case, a retinal surgeon should confirm that the eye is healthy enough and that the Lasik procedure will not harm the retina.
Dry eyes make it hard for the eyes to heal properly. Therefore, it is a relative contraindication. It is a common symptom for those who use contact lenses for a long term. Some medications, health problems, and age can cause dry eyes too. In this case, the patient uses artificial tears and lubricating drops together with dietary supplements.
